You can trim a tree any time of year, but some times are a lot better than others.
Late winter is usually best
For most trees, late winter while the tree is dormant is the best time to trim. The leaves are gone, so it's easy to see the branches. And the tree heals well heading into spring.
The oak exception
In Ohio, it's best not to prune oak trees from spring through mid-summer. That's when oak wilt spreads, and fresh cuts make oaks more likely to get it.
Dead branches can't wait
Timing rules are for healthy branches. A dead or dangerous branch hanging over your roof should come down whenever you notice it.
After a storm
Broken and hanging branches after a storm should be taken care of right away, before they fall on their own.
