When trimming is enough
The tree is healthy, but branches are over the roof, rubbing the siding or hanging over the driveway. Dead branches here and there. A tree that's just overgrown.
When it needs to come down
The tree is dead or mostly dead. It's leaning more and more. There are big cracks in the trunk or rot at the base. Or it's growing right into the house.
