A lot of trees can be moved. Not all of them. Here's what decides it.
Size is the big one
Younger, smaller trees handle a move a lot better than big established ones. A bigger tree loses more of its roots when it's dug up, and that makes it harder to recover.
Timing matters
The best time to move a tree is when it's dormant. Early spring before the leaves come out, or fall after they drop.
The new spot matters too
Pick a spot with enough room to grow and the right amount of sun for that kind of tree. Otherwise you'll be moving it again in a few years.
Aftercare
A transplanted tree needs steady watering through its first season while the roots get established.
